Blueprints 2018
Inspired by the flora and fauna in the lower grounds of UCC, children from Drishane Castle Direct Provision centre in County Cork collaborated with Cloghroe Scouts for an art project that explored identity and diversity in Nature.
Over four Saturdays in October 2018, the children learned new art making approaches with artist Aoife Desmond. They engaged in collaborative activities that focused on earth, water, fire and air. The children designed mandalas, built boats and structures from natural materials, created cyanotype prints and watercolour drawings.
Each participant was given a creative pack at the start of the project consisting of sketchbook, watercolours, pencils and tote bag. They were encouraged to use their materials to collect and create between sessions.
Each session included a creative walk, exploring the University lower grounds, River Lee, Fitzgerald’s Park or University Community Garden. These explorative walks were important for building relationships between the children as they discovered elements of nature together that would inform their own artworks.
The children’s artwork went on public display in the Glucksman as part of the People and the Planet exhibition in November 2018.
