Navigating the Urban Landscape
A creative project for teenagers to learn about image-making for self-expression
In Autumn 2016, the Glucksman invited teenagers living in Direct Provision centres around Cork City and County to come to the museum and partake in creative workshops with artists Roseanne Lynch, Cassandra Eustace, Dervla Baker and Curator of Education Tadhg Crowley. Over six weeks the group used photography, drawing and film to explore the UCC campus and beyond, plotting and mapping routes and creatively documenting their interactions and experiences.
Under the guidance of the artists the teenagers learnt about image-making for self-expression, enabling them to communicate their ideas visually with greater confidence and skill. The artworks created in the workshops went on public display in the Glucksman in February 2017 showcasing the creative talents of the group to the wider community. The exhibition brought together digital and film photography, drawings and a short film.
The short film created by the teenagers was selected for screening at the First Cut! Youth Film Festival 2017
Navigating the Urban Landscape is delivered as part of the Glucksman's Creative Agency programme funded by the Arts Council of Ireland.
