Access
The Glucksman aims to empower through art and is committed to being an inclusive organisation accessible to diverse communities and interests, especially those who may not ordinarily or easily access cultural experiences.
There are a range of facilities to help your visit to our exhibitions, events and to experience the UCC Art Collection both onsite and offsite. The following information may be of assistance to you when planning your visit. The Glucksman has 5 floors open to the public, including galleries, a Gallery Shop, Café and event room. Our entrance is a power assisted door. All galleries, café & event room are wheelchair & buggy accessible and can be accessed by lift with braille buttons.
The artworks in our exhibition across our three galleries are delicate. Please do not touch or handle any of the displays.
Getting to us
The Glucksman is located is on the campus of University College Cork and is open to the public year-round. The gallery is situated in the University’s picturesque lower grounds, accessible to pedestrians from the ceremonial gates at the corner of Western Road and O’Donovan’s Road. Cork city bikes have a stand directly in front of the UCC ceremonial gate entrance. The gallery and the university are served by the No. 205 and No. 208 bus routes.
Public Parking
There is public parking for visitors to the Glucksman at the UCC Perrots Inch car park. There is also pay parking available near the Main Ceremonial Gates entrance along the Mardyke and O'Donovan's Road.
Information Desk
The Information Desk is located in Gallery 1 (Level 2.) There’s always a member of our Gallery Assistant Team at the Information Desk; they can advise you on any aspect of your visit and answer any questions you might have. They can give information about our exhibitions and upcoming events.
Toilets & Changing Places Facilities
- The Glucksman has toilet facilities located across multiple floors.
- A gender-neutral toilet is located in Gallery 1 (Level 2.)
- A gender neutral, accessible toilet with a low sink and wall mounted rails is located in Gallery 1 (Level 2), please note this toilet does not contain a hoist system.
- The Changing Places facility can be accessed through the café on Level 0.
- Men’s & Women’s toilets are located on Level 0; which can be accessed by stairs and the lift. There are additional Men's & Women's toilets located on Level -1; which can be accessed by stairs only.
- All toilet doors open inwards, and you do not need a key to access them.
Seating
- There is a selection of seating options available in Gallery 1 (Level 2).
- Portable stools are available in Gallery 1 (Level 2) and Gallery 2 (Level 4) visitors are welcome to borrow one for their gallery visit. The stools have a handle for easy carrying and weigh 1.7kg.
Assistant Dogs
Service, assistant, emotional support and working dogs in training are welcome inside the gallery spaces.
Autism Friendly Services
- Many UCC students identified The Glucksman as one of the quiet & calm environments that they would go to on campus if they needed to get away from the noise or movement of the busy campus, you can view a helpful toolkit for recognising quiet spaces on campus at Austism & Uni.
- Please note, the audio from one video work is played out-loud in Gallery 2. This audio may move throughout the galleries also. Please speak to a member of staff if you would like further information before or during your visit.
-For visitors sensitive to crowds it is worth noting that at peak times and when events are taking place, parts of our gallery spaces can be very busy. The quietest time to visit The Glucksman is usually when we first open from 11am – 12pm and later in the evening from 4pm – 5pm. The busier times in these spaces are from 12 – 3pm or while events are taking place.
Sensory Kits & Visual Aids
We have a number of sensory kits available to loan from our Information Desk. These kits include; a pair of ear defenders, sunglasses, a selection of fidget toys, a liquid timer, a stress ball, a magnifying glass and & ear plugs.
We have visual aids at our Information desk with a selection of items that may be useful for visitors time in our gallery spaces. These aids include; large printed text of our current exhibitions, tinted overlays for visitors with dyslexia, magnifying sheets for visitors with visual impairments.
Visitors with Light Sensitivities
- Lighting levels in the gallery spaces differ throughout the building.
- Gallery 1 and Gallery 2 both have a lot of natural light coming from large bay windows
- The Small Sisk has low lighting while the Large Sisk is well lit by spotlights and has no natural light.
Visitors who are Blind or have a Visual Impairment
- NaviLens codes are available throughout the gallery spaces. This is a navigation and labelling app that reads out signs and audio describe locations, to help blind or low-vision users navigate the space and exhibition.
- We provide Audio Described Tours throughout the year, please ask our gallery assistants for more information.
Visitors with Noise Sensitivities
- Noise levels in the gallery spaces differ throughout the building and audio does often travel between galleries.
- Please note that audio plays out loud on Level 4 in the building. This audio may move throughout the galleries. Please speak to a member of staff if you would like further information before or during your visit.
