Spring 2018

Monsters in the Museums

Creative Transformations

From Frankenstein to the Hulk, Shrek to Beauty and the Beast, monsters who seem to be really frightening often turn out to be misunderstood. In Spring 2018, the Glucksman invited children from schools and community groups to take over the museum with fabulous creatures of their own making. The children used the theme of monsters to explore ideas of difference and respect, researching and preparing for the visit with teachers before creating their artworks with professional artists during creative sessions in the museum.

The project culminated in a public exhibition of the created work at the Glucksman on St. Patrick’s weekend.

The exhibition was opened to the participating children and their families by Irish illustrator Chris Judge (author of The Lonely Beast and The Brave Beast) with a memorable interactive storytelling event.
