The Sun and Only!
The Sun and Only! was a performance and outdoor exhibition by artist Isadora Epstein about weather lore and classical mythology, presented as a weather report with a surprising forecast...
Commissioned by the Glucksman in partnership with Cork Midsummer, music and visual art were brought together with forgotten and familiar stories of the sun – from Icarus’ melty wings to the shepherd’s delight of a red sky at night. Taking place at TEST SITE, an urban research initiative situated on Kyrl’s Quay in Cork City dedicated to the examination and promotion of sustainable social engagement, the exhibition of interactive set pieces was open for audiences to view in the garden spaces – as, even with all this talk of the sun, there’s always a chance of rain. With costumes by artist Amie Egan and set design by Millie Egan, alongside performances by musicians Méabh McKenna and Sarah Grimes.
Isadora Epstein makes performances from her research of art history and mythology. Epstein has previously performed works at the Hugh Lane Gallery, the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Sirius Arts Centre, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Her work brings together an ensemble of artists working in visual art and music.
Curated by Chris Clarke and produced by the Glucksman, this new visual arts project was funded by a project award by the Arts Council of Ireland, and created for the Cork Midsummer Festival. The performances took place on 15 and 16 June 2024.
