Hidden Histories

Hidden Histories was a community art project to mark 100 years of Irish women's right to vote funded by Cork City Council Arts Office.

Mahon Community Development Project: Larry Cullinane, Martha Harrington, Elsie Healy, Michael Kelleher, Rita Kelly, Eileen Knight, Patricia McNamara, Una O’Leary, Dorothy O’Sullivan, Jerry O’Sullivan, Viv Sadd, John Swanwick and Linda Wakefield

Curated by Tadhg Crowley

Hidden Histories was presented throughout the month of May 2018 as part of the nationwide Bealtaine Festival. The public project was a culmination of participative workshops and interviews with senior citizens from Mahon Community Development Project. Working with the group, the artist Dara McGrath created a series of photographic portraits that reflect on the progression of women’s rights and the role of women in shaping Cork city. These portraits celebrate the storyteller as well as the story being told by presenting quotes from each subject alongside their image.

The artworks were placed on display at Cork Public Museum, Cork City Hall, Cork City Library, Farmgate Café at the English Market and the Glucksman at University College Cork.

You can download a short podcast about the project below.

A short film capturing the interviews between the artist and participating seniors screened at the Glucksman from 11-25 May 2018. You can view the film below.
