Reading Group: Panorama Europa
Learn more about the artists and artworks on display at the Glucksman with our monthly Reading Group led by Curator of Exhibitions and Projects Katie O'Grady.
Drawing on texts and essays across theory, fiction, biography, and poetry, we invite you to learn more about and discuss selected artworks from our current exhibition, Panorama Europa.
Over the course of an hour, you will be invited to read a text aloud together* and discuss its themes, ideas, and context in relation to select artworks. This month we will be reading a chapter from The Empusium: A Health Resort Horror Story by Olga Tokarczuk.
The Empusium is a a folk horror novel set in a tuberculosis sanatorium just before World War I. The novel serves as a direct homage and a feminist subversion of Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain. Similar to the artists in Panorama Europa, Tokarczuk takes an existing masterpiece and by 'reusing it' places contemporary critiques into an old framework, highlighting the biases of the past that society can still carry today.
You do not need to prepare anything in advance, and no specialist knowledge is required.
