In Your Shoes
An exhibition by participants of The Lantern Community Project at Nano Nagle Place.
Before you start to judge me, step into my shoes and walk the life I’m living. See what I see. Feel what I feel. Then you’ll see how strong I really am.
This exhibition at The Glucksman Foyer Exhibition Spaces presents wearable art pieces that express something of life’s journey. During the summer art project at The Lantern Project, participants were invited to explore the idea that clothing, like art, can be a reflection of life’s experiences. Through creating wearable art, they considered how outward appearances might both reveal and conceal aspects of ourselves.
The shoes exhibited might be an old pair belonging to a participant, a new pair completely different from those they would normally wear, or handcrafted using plaster bandage, decoupage or scrap fabrics. They have been embellished with collage, paint, pressed flowers, chains, jewels and feathers.
From the shoes, participants went on to create other pieces of wearable art: a quirky hat, an embroidered coat, a ball gown, a punk rock outfit, a crocheted dress and a hand-painted t-shirt. Working with a mixture of upcycled second-hand clothing and bespoke pieces designed and made from scratch, the participants have created garments that communicate the adventure of lives well lived.
An environment has been created for visitors to wander through and discover the deeper messages within the work. It is an invitation to reflect on the participants’ life journeys and the perseverance it has taken to walk in their shoes.
