In her video, painting and sculptural practice, Linda Quinlan weaves a kind of visual alchemy, choreographing a playful set of relations between image, objects and sound. Through an investigation of material processes, her inquiry burrows deep into the folds and forces that determine our experience of the material world and our relation to it. Her more recent work is grounded in the activity of painting, developing imagery that aims to capture both an ecological and civic spirit and question ideas of love, survival, nature and the feminine.
She is a graduate of the MFA program at the Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam and NCAD, Dublin and a BA from the Crawford College of Art and Design, Cork. Her recent exhibitions include a solo show with Berlin Opticians Gallery, Dublin and a group show at Scoil Lorcain, Dublin. She has exhibited at Bloomberg Space, London; IMMA, Dublin; Oakville Galleries, Toronto; Centre Rhénan d’Art Contemporain, CRAC, Alsace; The Douglas Hyde Gallery; Dublin; the RHA, Dublin, the Hugh Lane Gallery; Dublin; the Glucksman, Cork and the Crawford Gallery, Cork.
For Graft, Linda has engaged with Cork city’s renowned English Market. Her painted designs of oysters, lemons, and other foodstuffs will adorn a series of customised aprons worn by the market traders of its various stalls and shops, and will be activated through their interactions with visitors and customers. In creating this new work, Quinlan captures the living vibrant spirit of the market and develops a sumptuous visual vocabulary that will appeal to both appetite and our senses; taste, smell and touch.
