The GLUCKSMAN Little Interview

This week we hear from Laurence Davis, In Detail contributor and lecturer in the Department of Government, UCC.

Laurence Davis: 22 May 2015

What are you reading?
I am particularly enjoying the following at the moment: Audre Lorde, Sister Outsider; Murray Bookchin, The Next Revolution; Raymond Carver, Beginners; The World Split Open, a Literary Arts Reader.

Favourite museum?
Musée d’Orsay in Paris and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, near where I grew up in Pennsylvania.

Best performance?
The most memorable performance I attended this year was Camille O’Sullivan’s scintillating, feminist-inspired adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘The Rape of Lucrece’. An older favourite is Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre’s unforgettable 2003 première of ‘Giselle’.

What is your most treasured possession?
My books.

What work(s) of art inspire you?
Ursula K. Le Guin’s anarchist and ambiguously utopian novel The Dispossessed is a towering artistic achievement and an abiding inspiration.

A lightbulb moment?
My first year at Oxford University as an undergraduate Visiting Student.

Guilty pleasure?
Watching ‘Take Me Out’ on the television. An academic friend recently commented: ‘Laurence, this is wrong on so many levels’.

What would you like to be doing right now?
Lying on a beautiful beach in the sun in a world that genuinely valued social equality.
