The GLUCKSMAN Little Interview

This week we hear from artist Colin Darke, whose work is currently on show in Gallery 2 as part of Everything Must Go.

Colin Darke: 11 December 2015

What are you reading?
Volume One of “The Aesthetics of Resistance” by Peter Weiss – a novel which merges anti-fascism with cultural critique.

Favourite museum?
It’s been far too long since I’ve been there and I’d love to see Oxford’s Pitt Rivers Museum again.

Best performance?
Last year Lisa Dwan performed three Beckett plays at The MAC in Belfast, including “Not I”, which must be the most difficult of all his plays for any actor to tackle. She did a very good job.

What is your most treasured possession?
A now very battered key ring that my son made for me when he was around eleven years of age and which has been in constant use ever since.

What work(s) of art inspire you?
So many, but those by Courbet, Duchamp and Brecht would be top of the list.

A lightbulb moment?
In 1990, sitting in an office in Derry, where I worked, seeing a colleague reading a cigarette-paper “comm”. This still continues to inform much of my work.

Guilty pleasure?
I stopped smoking some years ago, but I confess I still regard the odd cigarette as a treat.

What would you like to be doing right now?
Sitting on a patch of grass, looking down on the Forum in Rome, eating pizza.
