Opening Hours

The GLUCKSMAN Little Interview

Every month we ask the same set of questions to someone collaborating with us. Over the last two years, we have interviewed diverse members of the Glucksman community - artists, academics, staff members, guests, audiences and workshop participants. The responses were funny, inspiring, revealing and always a great read. The archive of 2015's interviews can be found here and the 2016 archive is here. Thanks to all who took part!

This month, our Little Interview features Kirstie North, co-curator of Now Wakes the Sea, currently on display in Galleries 1 and 2.

Kirstie North: August 2017

What are you reading?
Leviathan, or the Whale
, by Philip Hoare. I'm halfway through and really enjoying it. I just bought his new book Rising Tide Falling Star so I'll be moving straight on to that.

Favourite museum?
I visited MOMA New York for the first time a few weeks ago. The presentation of artworks was incredible. It would be great to work with those kinds of budgets and that collection!

Best performance?
Amanda Coogan's live exhibition I'll Sing you a Song from Around the Town at the RHA in 2015, made a big impression on me. I think it was the first time I really took performance art seriously. She has great presence.

What is your most treasured possession?
My husband James cast me a silver rose and blade of corn which he gave to me on our wedding day. He had given me the actual rose a year earlier when we got engaged in Girona and then kept it, dried it and cast it.

What work(s) of art inspire you?
So many it's hard to choose. I have always loved Surrealism, so I think that's probably the art movement that inspires me most.

A lightbulb moment?
Leaving my job in an office and going to art college.

Guilty pleasure?
Crunchy cheetos, which you can only get in the states. As I eat them rarely I don't feel that guilty about it!

What would you like to be doing right now?
Reading a book on the beach in the sun, looking out to sea.
