The GLUCKSMAN Little Interview

Every month we ask the same set of questions to someone collaborating with us. Over the last two years, we have interviewed diverse members of the Glucksman community - artists, academics, staff members, guests, audiences and workshop participants. The responses were funny, inspiring, revealing and always a great read. The archive of 2015's interviews can be found here and the 2016 archive is here. Thanks to all who took part!

This month, our Little Interview features Professor Claire Connolly
who is the academic lead on the recent Deep Maps exhibition.

Claire Connolly: November 2017

What are you reading?
Anthony Trollope’s 1875 novel, The Way We Live Now, in Francis O’Gorman's new edition for Oxford World’s Classics. A gripping plot, involving financial speculation, love and politics. All told in a wonderfully sophisticated and humane narrative voice. Also Mike McCormack’s Solar Bones, which is as good as everyone says.

Favourite museum?
Perhaps the Isabella Stewart Gardner in Boston with its brilliantly idiosyncratic collection and strange empty frames on the wall. In general, I favour buildings and collections that tell their own stories rather than ones that just frame beautiful objects.

Best performance?
Druid Shakespeare in Galway and again in Skibbereen. A privilege to see this exceptionally talented cast make Shakespeare so thoroughly their own.

What is your most treasured possession?
My art deco engagement ring.

What work(s) of art inspire you?
The first time that I saw Kathy Prendergast’s City Map drawings was a revelation. I remain fascinated by the cultural resonances of cartography.

A lightbulb moment?
Realising that I over-use the word epiphany.

Guilty pleasure?
Watching nonsense on Netflix.

What would you like to be doing right now?
On a sunny September day - swimming in the sea.
