Opening Hours

The GLUCKSMAN Little Interview

Each week we ask the same set of questions to a different member of our community. Throughout 2015, we interviewed diverse members of the Glucksman community - artists, academics, staff members, guests, audiences and workshop participants. The responses were funny, inspiring, revealing and always a great read. The archive of 2015's interviews can be found here. Thanks to all who took part!

This week we hear from Dr. Marie Bourke, former Keeper and Head of Education at the National Gallery of Ireland who contributed an Art and Ideas talk as part of the public programmes for 2116: forecast of the next century.

Marie Bourke: 13 May 2016

What are you reading?
On Elizabeth Bishop by Colm Toibín (Princeton 2015) – picked up a copy of her poetry in Chicago, having come across her work many times. Then found a copy of Toibín’s book in Charlie Byrne’s bookshop on a visit to Galway. Aside from unpeeling and revealing Bishop’s poetry, Tóibín draws interesting links between the poet and his own life.

Favourite museum?
Where do I start – Ireland, Europe, the world? A favourite museum is usually where there is a well displayed collection, ease of access, and where staff really work to make it a worthwhile place to be.

Best performance?
CoisCeim Dance Theatre’s innovative ‘The Art of Performance’ designed by David Bolger, given in the National Gallery of Ireland in 2014 as part of the Gallery’s programme marking its 150th Anniversary.

What is your most treasured possession?
No competition – has to be Barry and our 2 beloved girls (though they might say
Jake the dog!)

What work(s) of art inspire you?
Works of quality, creativity and innovation, that have something to say, and that you can look at again and again and find-enjoy something fresh every time.

A lightbulb moment?
So many – ‘the power of the internet’ – saw this when a museum symposium was live-streamed both as an experiment and to involve a wider audience, got feedback/responses on twitter, facebook, Instagram, #tag, text, email etc from China, Australia, Canada, Europe, S. Africa, Scandinavia, Europe, UK and USA…a key to thinking more globally about local issues.

Guilty pleasure?
Glass of wine end of day.

What would you like to be doing right now?
Taking a walk on the Green Road in the Burren with Barry and Jake (dog).
