The GLUCKSMAN Little Interview

Each week we ask the same set of questions to a different member of our community. Throughout 2015, we interviewed diverse members of the Glucksman community - artists, academics, staff members, guests, audiences and workshop participants. The responses were funny, inspiring, revealing and always a great read. The archive of 2015's interviews can be found here. Thanks to all who took part!

This week our Little Interview series features Danielle Byrne, UCC deputy admissions officer who co-ordinates the UCC Open Day which took place on campus on 8th October 2016.

What are you reading?
I’m reading All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr at the moment and I love it. It’s utterly beautiful, heart-warming and tragic, tense and yet softly delicately written. A mesmerising read that I don’t want to finish. I’m also reading How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk, and listening to Wolf Hall when I get the chance.

Favourite museum?
Possibly the easiest of all these questions for me to answer – the American Natural History Museum in New York. I visited many times as a child (I grew up in NY) and the whole place filled me with awe every time. I am planning to bring my children to New York next summer and this museum is at the top of our list of must-sees.

Best performance?
This is a tricky one for me. I’ve seen very few live performances of any description in the last 8 years I’ve just realised, excluding Christmas shows at the Gaelscoil (which are wonderful of course). Here are two stand outs from years gone by though:
Arcade Fire, Electric Picnic, 2005 – yes I was actually there!
Neil Young, Live at the Marquee, 2008 – what a trooper

What is your most treasured possession?
This is another tie.
This poem, written by my daughter on a slip of paper, for me:
You are love with you are love
You are me you should
Be in my love CLUB
With hearts and you
Are love

(Complete with a drawing of the Love Club entrance)

Also, a photograph of my dear old Daddy and me circa 1980 where I am feeding him a cookie. Love just oozes out of this photo. I lost my Dad earlier this year so all photographs of him are pretty treasured but this one is truly special.

What work(s) of art inspire you?
A painting my mother has by Sean McSweeney. I don’t know the name of it but it is of a trademark green field and it’s stunning. I could stare at that painting for a very long time.

A lightbulb moment?
Years ago, I trained as a yoga teacher. I can’t remember the single-light bulb moment, but during that time, I suppose about halfway through the course, something really clicked for me personally when all the elements of the yoga practice just made so much sense. That yogic awareness is definitely not as strong now as it was then, but the effects of that training not just on my own personal practice but also on every part of my life has remained with me since. The training certainly changed me and my life forever.

Guilty pleasure?
My children, Elsa and Billy, and I have just started watching the Great British Bake Off for the first time. It’s a lovely cuddly time for us, and the kids are really good at predicting early on in each episode who will be going home. They get really sad about it, which is quite sweet. When they’re gone to bed? A glass of red wine, an episode of The Good Wife, and a bit of dark chocolate. I feel guilty but satisfied ;-)

What would you like to be doing right now?
As I am currently in the throes of last-minute preparations for tomorrow’s UCC Open Day, I would really to be in the throes of the day itself – much more enjoyable for me!
